Understanding Solana MEV: How Validators Extract Value and What It Means for Traders

Maximal Extractable Value shapes every trade on Solana. Here's how validators and bots profit from transaction ordering and how you can protect your fills.
MEV isn't a bug — it's a feature of how Solana works
Every transaction on Solana goes through a validator who decides the order in which transactions are processed. That ordering power has value. Validators can arrange transactions to capture profits — or sell that ordering power to bots that do the same.
This is MEV: Maximal Extractable Value. On Solana, MEV is less aggressive than on Ethereum but still impacts every trader's bottom line.
How MEV manifests on Solana
Three forms of MEV affect Solana traders:
1. DEX arbitrage
When a token trades at different prices on Raydium and Orca, bots buy on the cheaper DEX and sell on the more expensive one. This arbitrage is actually healthy — it keeps prices aligned. But the bots compete for this profit, driving up priority fees for regular users.
2. Sandwich attacks
A bot spots your large buy order in the mempool, buys before you (driving the price up), lets your order execute at the higher price, then sells immediately after. You get a worse fill, the bot profits from the difference.
3. Liquidations
When a leveraged position is about to be liquidated, bots compete to be the first to execute the liquidation and claim the bonus. This is the most legitimate form of MEV — it keeps lending protocols healthy.
The Jito solution
Jito is a Solana validator client that operates a private mempool. Transactions sent through Jito are not visible to the public before confirmation. This prevents frontrunning and sandwich attacks.
Most major wallets and trading bots now offer Jito integration. In Phantom, you can enable Jito protection in settings. The small fee (0.0001-0.001 SOL) is worth it for any trade above 10 SOL.
Monitoring MEV activity
The Pulse dashboard visualizes MEV activity on the network. When you see clusters of tightly-spaced buy-sell pairs, sandwich attacks are active. During these periods, always use Jito protection and avoid high-slippage trades.
MEV is a tax on uninformed trading. The best defense is awareness: know when MEV is active, use private mempools, and keep your slippage tight.
