Solana is fast — but different use cases need different trade-offs

Solana's L1 handles 5,000+ TPS with sub-second finality. That's enough for DeFi, trading, and most consumer apps. But certain use cases need more: gaming with millions of micro-transactions, AI inference verification, or custom execution environments that don't fit the SVM model.

Enter Solana L2s. In 2026, a new ecosystem of layer-2 solutions is emerging that settle on Solana but provide specialized execution environments. Here's what exists, what's coming, and why it matters.

Sonic SVM — the gaming hyperchain

Sonic is the first Solana L2 designed specifically for games. It's an SVM (Solana Virtual Machine) chain that settles to Solana but provides dedicated block space for gaming transactions.
